Another coin I came across on ebay, a rare date and mint sold by someone in the Russian Federation.

It looks fake to me, flat surface and mushy letters, but I thought I'd ask the opinions of others. The seller does have a fake 1812 Napoleon I 5 francs up for sale as well, so I'm assuming the Barber isn't real either.

Here's the Napoleon:

I agree the barber half looks counterfeit. The S is wrong and the denticles at 4 o'clock on the obverse make me think this might be a cast coin.

Where did the E go on the reverse? I doubt the inner line of the E is a high point..

Are the stars on barbers always going to have the same orientation or will they be slighly different?

The barber is an obvious fake.

3 problems that stick out....
1. They used the wrong font on the date
2. As CSOTUS pointed out, the middle part of the "E" on the reverse is missing
3. The porousness of the fields point to casting.

Coin is definitely a Counterfeit
Rest in Peace

Thanks for the helpful responses. I'm glad I was able to spot it and didn't waste my money bidding on it. I guess I am getting a bit better at spotting these things.

The lettering is all off on this fake. IMO, it's good enough to pass off as the real thing under a brief examination.

I'll take "Not Even Close" for $200, Alex.

Then again, the final price reflected the reality. This is worth well over $500 if real.

A lot of these fake coins now have very similar toning and wear patterns around the devices and lettering. That is a huge red flag now.

I've come across this guy's account several times. I believe he had several fake morgan's and a 1909 S VDB obvious fake for sale.

His feedback says otherwise =P
