Any ideas on what caused this? Found the coin while searching a change box in the break room at work.

Thanks,
Bill

either a very weak strike or some one put acid on the obverse. your obv pic is very gray that leads me to think acid more than strike

There is a raised crease almost dead center on the obverse. Date looks to be a 1995D or 96D. QX5 Microscope is wrapped and under the tree. I'll post better pics on Christmas day.

Looks like PM damage on the obv.
but maybe a slight Grease Filled Die on the rev.

I wouldn't say weak strike as the reverse is complete. Weak strike would have left the obverse and reverse weak. I could be a brockage Coin. You can see the reverse slightly on the obverse. Looks interesting. Almost looks like a die crack through the center. So it is a coin an error specialist would have to determine. Is the reverse looking uncirculated? With the age it could have been tampered with. But closer images might help.

That coin was struck by a capped die. It is also known as a late stage brockage.

A coin that gets struck gets stuck to a die and each strike thereafter imparts details from the reverse on the obverse of coins that are subsequently struck.

The first few coins are brockages and as the coin that is stuck to the die gets thinner and thinner due to the strikes, it leaves less and less details of the reverse on the obverse of the coins being struck.

This coin has all the look of that type of error. On my Found In Rolls page, I have a cent in the ERRORS section that is this type of error.

http://www.foundinrolls.com

click on ERRORS or scroll down through the page to get there. If you are dialup, let me know and I'll give you the link to the picture.

I hope this helps,

Thanks,
Bill

Here's the same scanned image but larger. I'll post another pic once I unwrap the QX5. It does look like a capped die/late stage brockage as listed on foundinrolls. After the holidays, I'm sending it to James Wiles/CONECA for attribution and grading.

Here are some new pics taken today with the new QX5...Santa dropped it off early this morning :)

I was able to make out the date but not the MM. It's a 1995.

Appreciate any comments and do you think it's worth grading and attributing?

Thanks and Merry Christmas,
Bill
