Looks like you have a TYPE II (b) - Wide Date High 40, Repunched 4 (High 0) Quote: Initially, this variety appears to be exactly the same as the previous listing, however, under closer examination, it can be seen that there are some minor differences. Both of these varieties have the High "0" and the Repunched "4", but the Alterations made to this digit are significantly more noticeable. Finally, there is a very minor variation to the size of the date, whereas, with this example, it is almost imperceptibly Wider. -CVI Newfoundland Coin Variety Identification - B. Borsellino Really nice coin you have there! Do you have any pics of the obverse?

I will take a couple pictures of both side and post them. I will try to get them clearer.

That is definitely not Machine Doubling! I don't know if "re-engraved" is the proper terminology, the dates were placed into a working punch. That looks like punch doubling (hub doubling in US terms)... PS - to CCF!! Always awesome to see another NFLD collector here!

..Doryboy to CCF, yeah, great to have another Newfoundland collector as a member here. I have seen lots of repunched one cent 1940 Newfoundland coins but, got to say have not seen a 5 cent coin.

FYI - Doryboy, your coin was in the January/February 2016 CN Journal, Canadian Spice column. I will send you a copy of the article, with this topic and your coin photos!! Thanks again and keep hunting with those sharp eyes!!

Just read the article...
I like it! Nice to put it out there the difference between a re-engraved digit versus MD. I'll have to keep that in mind as I search my 5 cent pieces.. This era is VERY fun to collect. Paul with his 50 cent pieces and then all these 5 cent pieces from the rock... so much to look at and so fun to collect!
