Hi everyone,

If I give all my toners and cherry red lincolns a little bath to get some of the junk off them will it take away the natural beauty? Or will it just make them glisten so I can make beautiful rolls of them!?

THANKSSS

I have not experienced any diminished toning on any of the coins I dipped in acetone . But then I don't dip very many toned coins I have had a Buffalo nickel tone from being dipped in it( it went in silvery grey- came out lightly gold toned) , but no NT coins have changed as long as the toning is not dirt ! I am wary of dipping copper in acetone as I have heard it can tone copper. I am going to have to try a few copper cents to see if it changes them or not- I suggest you do some testing first also.

I have a TINY amount of " Trader Sam's Formula 7 Copper coin cleaner" My dealer says it is the best cleaner there is (was) for copper. He has said it will remove even old fingerprints by soaking. If anyone has access to this cleaner, I would be VERY appreciative to get the information, it is not made anymore and is sought by many. The amount I have is very ,very small and I will not know if it works until I get a coin that deserves it.

To be honest, acetone hasnt done anything for me yet. I think its useless so far. I mean, did I buy the wrong stuff or something lol. I've tried to soak for a day, hour, 10 minutes...nothing. So I dont think it will remove toning either.

acetone isn't going to remove toning or even a fingerprint that has been there awhile but it will remove dirt, tape or other contaminants on the coin. It is not a heal all and if it doesn't work for you then chances are you are expecting it to work like e-z-est or something that removes metal along with everything on the coin which 100% acetone doesn't do, those other products can harm a coin if done improperly (and its easier done bad than done right)

Unless the coin has PVC or other harmful deposits on it ,,then why dip or soak the coin ?

blow it off with a can of computer grade compressed air and holder it .

I've used it and it cleans coins well
but sometimes a little subtle "stuff"
on the coin helps to bring out some detail.
like a weak die crack,on a completely cleaned coin
is hard to notice.Dirt seemed to make it noticeable.

The only toning that will be removed by acetone is sometimes a bad AT job. However, sometimes a coin has a layer of gunk on it that will be removed by acetone leaving a toned area where the gunk formerly resided. The acetone did not cause the toning but the gunk can hide toning that it created.

I see acetone as a coin preservative. It removes any (surface) grime, oil, adhesive, or other contaminants. Those things can cause permanent damage over time. But once the damage is done (at the chemical level) acetone won't do anything.

Some time back there was a story on the internet about how Acetone will ruin coins. So I tried it. One of the things the article said was it will distroy coins if used in sunlight. So I put cents, nickels, dimes, quarters in a glass jar, covered it, some coins dirty, some toned, some just average. One day in my garage on my work bench. One day in my garage on the window sill. One more day on a patio table in the sun. Removed all coins. Rinsed with distilled water. All looked the same as the day I put them there. If any difference, would need an electron microscope to detect.
