When looking at this coin I thought it had scratch. What is odd is that the "scratch" goes right through the Indian and stops at the planchet. Could it be some sort of strike through? Kind of looks like a scratch though.

With the amount of wear on the coin, I would say its a scratch.

I don't see how the amount of wear would relate on whether a coin has an error or not. A VG coin can have an error.

It's incuse, right? Although that raises the possibility of a strikethrough, it could also just be a dent. The fact that it remains perfectly uniform through what would have been varying depths inside a die makes me lean towards the latter.

Interesting indeed. Under strong magnification, if it's a scratch, you should see striations.

I would agree with a scratch or a dent. If it were a strikethrough I think the edges might not be as sharp or as visible with that wear.

Damage. If it was a strike through of something laying only in the device, it should be strongest in the areas of shallowest relief. So it should be strongest at the back of the neck and weaker on the front of the neck, point of bust and hair curl below the ear. Exactly the opposite of what we are seeing.

On the other hand if something dented the struck coin the impression would be greatest in the high relief areas and weakest in the low relief. That is exactly what we do see. Heavy on the point of bust and front of neck and the hair curl, weaker on the back of the neck and nonexistant in the field.
