Isn't this in violation to the Hobby Protection Act of 1973?

Note that link has been removed. We don't even want their name mentioned here. I don't even need to see who it was; I know. Yes, of course it's illegal, in the United States. They're in China.

Drew has discovered just how many unmarked counterfeit US coins are freely available on a certain large-scale Chinese commerce site whose parent corporation was recently listed on the Stock Market. They are the primary source of counterfeits being sold on ebay, and do not care that they're selling coins illegal in the US because they're not in the US. We do not allow mention of their name here. Literally - if you type it, it won't appear. It's a cuss word.

That seems short sighted to me, Dave. Wouldn't it be better to educate new members or collectors about them so they don't mistakenly give them business?

And yes it's China! It's said that the owner / starter of the site is the richest man in China. One get rich by selling replicas and fakes. You can find iFone or iPed on his site too.

We're as efficiently-indexed a website as is available in a Google Search, and we refuse to come up in a Search invoking their name. Threads here are top-5 Google results in minutes. We will not be connected to them, even in a negative sense. We don't want the association. Dealing directly with them is not the problem. A newbie here learns not to patronize questionable overseas vendors in the first few days, and they are more a volume seller - an intermediary, a clearinghouse for the actual producers - than a retailer. The real problem is those coins then showing up on ebay, sold by the people who buy from China to resell here. Those names we'll happily publish. One more thing - the damage that site does is far from limited to coins. They are the best place on Earth to find knockoffs of anything - Rolex, Gucci, any large brand. But money talks, and money has welcomed them to the US with open arms. That's what we face here.

I would have to think it wouldn't hurt to come out in a google search informing people of this shady practice, as it would educate people of the source of these counterfeits coming to market. I know it is probably a pointless battle but it would seem a good start.... After all if you want to take down the dealers. You gotta take down the source. A cop can bust meth dealers all day long.... But bust the labs and there is no product to deal.

The meth labs aren't on another continent, out of our legal reach. What would you suggest we do to force the Chinese to change their ways?

Not much you can do to force them to change. I just think that putting the info out so people can be aware of what is going on cant hurt. They won't change and that's why it's a pointless battle until our politicians get involved( which will never happen). But if people are aware they can choose not to buy locally. Which most people buying these off the bay wouldn't if they knew. If the local dealers can't sell em then they won't buy them from china. But it all boils down to people educating themselves. Which is rare, and funny for the amount being spent. I have been collecting a couple years and won't buy off the bay yet as I am still learning, and won't till I'm sure I know what I'm buying. I just relate to the lack of info on this forbidden topic as I remember when I first started with this forum these topics come up, and through bits and pieces here, as well as doing my reasurch I am understanding. But it would have been easier if we could just talk about it. Not everyone will take the time to educate themselves. Especially when you didn't realize the issue in the first place. Not to say I don't get where ya'll are coming from.

Counterfeit money is obviously not permitted here. If they are shipping it to the US, wouldn't they be illegal if it is counterfeit money?

He in fact stated how it could hurt because publishing the name here could create a search engine association between us and them that the moderators here do not want to have. If he wanted to totally deny any information about what this company is doing then he would have just locked this topic and killed it right there. Instead we now have an informative conversation about a huge Chinese operated counterfeit site that is absolutely poisonous to our hobby yet we haven't logged their name here in an effort to keep our world from there's separated. I'm sure if I wanted to know for my own reasons what this website is then I could find that out for myself.

Trust me on that. But we can't stop the earthquake which causes the tsunami; all we can do is try to cope with all the water in our yards.
