I'm trying to keep only 1 of each year in Capped Bust since I can't really afford to hold onto everything I come across.

So I've come to a difficult and unfortunate decision....

Which 1828 should I keep in my collection? One is obviously higher grade but is marred by damage on the obverse. The other is simply lower grade but not a bad selection. I tried to capture the cartwheel in the photograph of the higher grade, it really broke my heart when I first saw the intentional damage that had been done...

What are everyone's thoughts?

The reverse of both coins is similar grade to the obverse. (No damage on the higher grade reverse.)

I'd keep the lower grade coin. The marks on the other one are too distracting.

I agree with ed, try to keep the non damaged ones unless they are truly something awesome or sentimental.

The damaged one would bother me every time I looked at it. Easy choice.

Keep the lower. I believe that eye appeal is one of the biggest things. You want to be happy with your coins in your collection. Think about which you would like more to have.

Personally, I wouldn't enjoy seeing the details coin in my collection when I could've chosen a seemingly problem free one.

As you noticed everyone thinks the same. That damaged one would bother you every time you looked at it.

Thanks for all the input. The damaged piece has been a place holder in my collection for a few years and you're right, it bothers me every time I look at it. I swapped it out, and will be selling it.

I agree with the consensus. Eye appeal always wins and the damage is too distracting.

I guess I am not the norm.

I would keep the higher grade damaged coin.

For my 7070 set I have a few holed and cleaned coins that were higher grade than the "straight" grade coins I had.

I use my 7070 to show and educate non collector co workers and people I meet and the greater the details regardless of the damage the easier it is for them to see and understand the design.

However when I started and completed my 7070 it was more for me than a set to share with others.

Someone has to be different. This community would be boring without diversity of opinion.
