Today at school, I bought lunch from the cafeteria, which I don't do that often since I mostly bring it from home. The thing that shocked me was that the girl in front of me bought her lunch (it was 3 bucks) with a 100 dollar bill. Most likely a Series 2009A since it was a redesigned bill. The lunch lady asked her "is that all you've got?" and she said it was, otherwise she would've paid with a lower amount. And even more crazy, someone bought a bunch of snacks from the vending machine (75 cents each), but paid with bills and didn't bother taking their change. That's literally a free buck for me, since there were 4 quarters in the return. No silver or errors, but I figured it's worth mentioning since this has never happened at school before.

That is incredible. The biggest bill I've ever seen someone buy lunch with was a $20.

Just wondering, are you in middle school, high school, etc.? Don't reveal anything you don't want to, though.

I'm in high school, and if I didn't tell you earlier, lots of people around my age don't care about money because they're obviously using their parents' money, so I find change on the ground and in the vending machines practically every day.

This conversation probably belongs in GD.

That said I can't imagine paying for lunch with a Benjamin when I was a kid. Pretty sure my folks just made sure I had 5 bucks on hand at all times, including a couple dimes in the tongue of my shoe for an emergency phone call if needed...

I use $100 bills a lot.
Useful for paying at restaurants for groups of friends, and paying utility bills and weekly shopping.

They take up less room in your wallet. I have never been nervous about carrying $300 + in my wallet. Perhaps in other parts of the World, I would consider not carrying more than $20 in notes. I would then use the debit card which goes with me everywhere, but rarely used.

$1 notes were withdrawn from circuluation in Australia.
I never carry coins; they always go into a small plastic jar in my car; they pay for gas when needed, usually with $2 coins. Never had any problem unloading up to $100 of them at a gas station.
