I'm not certain, but could this be an error or just an "artifact" from scanning the coin? It's got me scratching my head: Thoughts?

Tentatively, I'm seeing a really lucky screwdriver hit. Off the top of my head I can't think of a Mint process which would do that, and there darn sure isn't a VAM with that feature. The whole hobby would be looking for them. Only more magnification will help further.

Or your scanner needs to put down the crack pipe.

My first thought was a knife stab. Don't know.

I have never bought a Morgan on ebay where the only available images are from scans. . . . until this one. This enigmatic feature has me intrigued, and I didn't have the 1896-S to begin with, so this is good. From what I can tell from the scans I think the seller is fairly accurate with the grade. We'll see when I get it in. Stay tuned, as high resolution, extreme close-up photos of the "enigma" will be coming soon. I really hope this isn't some sort of image artifact. I tend to think that it isn't. I certainly can see where this might be some sort of "hit" that struck the coin very clean and straight on. Here is the link to the BIN ad:

I can't think of anything in photography to cause an artifact like that save an amazing coincidental particle(s) on lens/sensor. We might as well deprecate that.

Yes, indeed. I'm fully with you on that. I'm excited about seeing this in hand. If it does turn out to be just a hit, it will still be a remarkable hit. It will be fun just figuring it out. Can't wait to photograph it.

Honestly, in my collection that's a keeper if only for the absolute serendipity of the hit. You can't do it any better.

How was that NOT intentional? Like with an ice pick and hammer or something

Keeper nonetheless!

Exactly why I am keeping it. A good conversation piece for sure.

Perhaps someone was trying to "create" an anomaly or error, as it were. It sure caught my attention.

Life is too broad for the provenance of the hit to ever be certain.
