On another note... is there any way we can "block" sellers.... I would rather block a seller so I never look at any of their listings ever again

Not fake, a genuine coin. Due to a lack of proofreading and editing the current edition of Charltons would have you believe that the missing stems is a marker for counterfeit 25cents. Not so for 1872-1880, the missing stems are found on many 1872 and 1874, as well as on all 1875 and 1880 genuine coins.

the reason I noticed was because an 1872 25 cents in another lot I was bidding on looked funny. I looked in the section in the Charlton regarding fakes and sure enough, it was. It was also missing the stems on L1 and R1. I searched other 1872s on ebay and this popped up.

the Charlton also describes a large low 2 which this coin also has.

Coin is real. Charleton's made a mistake. I will post good markers shortly.

Thanks Mike for putting this to bed. Your work is invaluable to our hobby and I appreciate you putting the time in to post. It's amazing Charlton's would print this information without absolute certainty in their data.
So does this hold true for all 25 cent pieces listed in the Charlton? Are the missing stems a bad marker? Thanks.

Quote: Are the missing stems a bad marker? Missing stems can simply be from worn over polished die's not to mention grease filled, so thats not accurate as a marker. The pics MM posted are the markers to look for along with that grainy surface. IMO

I am unsure as to why my markers were not used as created. I chose obverse markers which appear on the entire effigy run and can not be confused by differing portraits of the effigy run. (make sense?) lol
