Is it common to see die breaks on the D in DEI and on the a GRATIA.I got this cheap and it looks like it had some work done to it but for a few bucks I dont think I went too wrong.

Yes die cracks are common around the coin, look at the for doubling of the date 9 and the 3 are very nice to find.
try to take your photos above the coin and not at an angle for better results.
I always buy a coin at this grade -so a few bucks is good.
