You could have an acid dipped coin or something else. Pictures are needed to help.

If it is an acid coin, it will be thinner and smaller (diameter) then a standard 1986 penny. Put it together with another penny, preferably a 1986. Your penny is supposed to be 12 sided but it looks round to me. Does the surface look pitted? I can't tell in the photos.

Tough one with these photos... as someone else mentioned, it is supposed to be 12 sided, but only part of it appears to be (right side of the obverse). It might be a coin struck on a smaller foreign planchet - shame that it is well circulated.

In my opinion it looks as it should for a thin planchet, lack of detail and poor metal flow around the beads and rim area (thus the partial missing 12 sides). Better pics might tell more.

Nice find! Is the diameter slightly smaller than a regular cent for the same year? From the images it doesn't look like it was altered at all, just honest wear. Regarding it's value to a collector (if it's found to be an authentic error), I'd say more than $10 but less than $100. It's worn condition is a limiting factor.

is the coin magnetic? could it be a really toned dime planchet? I have seen many dimes stuffed inside of penny roles, and they look as brown/red as all of the cents inside.

The 1986 penny that is descibed in my original post with photos is not magnetic. Unfortunately the only other Canadian penny in our house is a 1946 penny. The 86 penny appears to be exactly the same diameter as the 46 penny.
About the attached photos - they were obtained with a video microscope that captures a 480 x 640 image. Is the issue with the photos the resolution or the views or both?
All of you can tell that I have never used a forum before and that I know zip about coins. I appreciate your patience and your responses.
