I picked up a nice little nickel collection in our last coin club auction and it had this nice '53 SF. When I got home and took it out I saw the lines coming from the denticles. I saw on coinsandcanada they have a photo (better than I could capture) and they call it trails. What exactly is this? Die Deterioration?

So it's die scratches. Pretty cool ... thanks.

Not scratches. I was the first to describe these (as noted on the traildies website) but I'll be darned if I know the cause other than it is in the die. One of my favorites is found on the 2005-P Minnesota quarter with a Doubled Die Reverse showing as an "Extra Tree". The trails are striking on this one.

Wow that is very cool and great pics Koinpro. The appearance of it looks like the metal got pushed up and out the top of the trees in the direction of the clear field but that extra tree is something else.
