Hi all,

In just a few days I'm going to Europe for my first time. I will be visiting many places and staying overnight in London, Amsterdam, Vimy, Normandy, and Paris. This trip is centred around education of WWI, but also incorporating Liberation Day ceremonies in Wageningen for the 70th anniversary of VE-day.

I have saved a total of 48 2005 VE-day nickels from Canada. I would like any opinions of what to do with them. Should I distribute them only in Wageningen? Would it be wrong to use these in change instead of Pounds/Euros? Should I give them to cashiers at restaurants or maybe tip jars?

It sounds very interesting tour, it would be nice to hear this afterwards too. Those countries are foreign countries for me too, but I think it's not good idea to give Canadian coins as a change in Europe. There's no similar habits to mix changes as you have in Canada and USA. Tip jar would be best place in my opinion, as you have very nice thought.

I'd be inclined to put the coins in flips and distribute them as gifts, explaining their significance. I think a European waitress emptying a tip jar and finding one would just think "oh - drat! Another foreign coin..."

I often take old large English pennies when I travel abroad and hand them out, but I always explain what they are and they are always appreciated!

Are you travelling by yourself or in a group?

You could give them to travelling companions or to people you meet in Europe who share a common interest in the commemorations.

Thanks for the responses (although I was too busy to check before leaving). I ended up giving some out to random people who attended a ceremony at the Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, including my tour director. I was thinking of leaving some on streets just for fun for people to pick up, but decided that they might be unfound or not cared about.
