I finally picked a VAM-31 off theBay and can do some comparison on the obverses. Side-by-side indicate that there were definitely two obverse dies paired with the "crumbled reverse" die. PG

VAM-1G Reverse (sorry for the glare):

VAM-31 Reverse (looks early in the "crumble" process):

I ran some lines on the date digits and the first 8 does appear to be a slightly different lateral position.

I'm not sure what the argument is here. VAMworld proves the dates are in different positions, and there is no argument that they're not different dies.

Obviously I read that thread, since I posted in it.

He's an old hand at this, and said the wise thing: more research is needed. That's why I didn't argue his points, even though I could tell by eye the dates were different.

Not lateral position. Height. As I confirmed a moment ago in the Gimp. Of course, I did not shoot the images or measure the coins myself, and they're slightly different photographically. So, like him, don't take me for Gospel either.
Rest in Peace

I took the date blowups into the Gimp and played with rotation until I aligned them - separately, they're not parallel - and measured best I could with a grid imposed. Based on what information I am able to glean from these images, the date tilt is not even similar - there's more space between the second 8 and denticles than the 1 and denticles.

But this is not exact.

Thanks for your analyses Daves X 2. Now if I could only find one that will grade to go into my set of 88-O's. This VAM-31 has a rub on the reverse that will probably get it kicked to the curb by the TPG's. Maybe time for some hard time in a bag of pennies?
