I didn't know where to post this, so I guess this location is as good as any.

I'm having a hard time focusing.
I have a large and very focused collection of WWII militaria.
Best advice my dad gave me when I started collecting WWII was "Focus, Focus, Focus".
So I did, and I'm very happy and enjoy that part of my collecting.

Now, I'm getting into Coins and have been for the last 6 months. I have books, I go online, I belong to a club, I visit other people with collections...I suck it all up. But I can't find one area I want to settle in on.
I WANT IT ALL

Here is what I'm focusing on thus far.
US coins only
1911 p, all denominations (100 year birth year for my son)
UNC ASE w 2011 - present/continuing (for my son)
1941 - 1945 Short set ALL denominations. High grade raw. For my WWII addiction.

Thats currently what I'm serious about.
But I see other sets that are so attainable too.
Like 2009 Presidential Penny Set.
SBAs
WWII Commemoratives
Sacagawea $
Franklins
Ikes
Modern Jeffs
Peace dollars
The list goes on and on for me.

HONDO has a topic in the Commemorative section called "Stay True to the Quest"
I'm encouraged by that thread, but saddened too that I'm not "True" to anything yet.

Thoughts, Ideas for focusing?
I don't need more ideas, I simply need ideas on how to focus.

In the end analysis, you just have to sit down, make decisions and act on them. There isn't a thing that we could tell you which will make you do that, and if you do that we don't need to tell you anything. We can't help with this any more than we can help you put your finger on your nose.

Make a choice. Stick to it. Full stop. Let your budget be your guide as to whether that choice is one issue or six.

Don't even try. I've been trying to focus on one thing or another for over 60 years and no luck yet. Why bother?

I hear you loud and clear.
But man, I just can't focus and stop looking at everything.
Maybe it's my mid life crisis kicking in?

It's just really been bothering me lately that I can't make a decision on where to go.
Especially since I'm so focused on my WWII stuff...it's weird to me.

I'll use this thread as a springboard for my thoughts.

Maybe once I finish one of my 2 sets that can be finished. My 1911p or 1941 - 1945 set that will put this all into perspective for me a little better.

Inner peace...inner peace.

Perspective is the key, and you need to take a longer version of it. You're not gonna collect them all now, but if you focus on one you will eventually have them all.

The thought that helps me sort out the noise is to ask myself not what I am most interested in, but rather what I feel like working on next.

That's my approach for coin collecting, too, although it hasn't quite been 60 years yet.

When building my modest camera collection, I was tightly focused -- post WWII Japanese and German 35mm rangefinders and SLRs, with detachable lenses and mechanical focal plane shutters. I wanted to keep the collection small -- no folders, medium or large format, etc.

I am fairly new at this too and I share your problem, but there is one thing I am doing to help. I bought a type set album from Intercept Shield (Dansco is currently not printing their version). It covers every type U.S. coin from the 1800's to the present. You can also buy an additional page for gold coins if you want.

Here's the benefit: over time you are going to build a beautiful set and it's a lot of fun hunting those coins down at a price that fits your budget. Over time, certain coins, once you actually own one and have it in your hand, "speaks" to you more than others. Its really tough to explain but you'll see what I mean. When that happens, you know what you'll really want to collect.

Just a thought. Hope it helps.

Variety is the spice of life... and a good portfolio! From your list and for the money I would go for an unirc ike set. Ikes are poised for future gains!

JimmyJames, "Noise" is exactly the correct word to describe my coin thought process right now.

Afab67, whatever you said simply cleared up some of that noise. How you said it, or how it struck me at the moment, but dang....thanks.

I'm going to focus on my WWII 1941 - 45 short set. Get me some blank dansco pages and start that route.
I'll also focus on my 1911p set which is more expense per coin than the WWII set.
So I have the best of both worlds here.
Affordable not to hard to acquire US WWII set.
Then when I have a few extra bucks to spend on higher $ coins I'll get some 1911p items.

Thanks for letting me bend your ears.
I now have a road to follow.

Your all great.
