Hi so this State Quarter shows no signs of the copper sandwich on the rim. Weighs 5.6 pics attached. Any info appreciated, thanks

Probably an escapee of a platinum plated collection that the TV hucksters sell. Broken free/stolen from the collection and now spent. If you took a razor blade and made a vertical mark in the reeding on the edge, you would see the copper there. If you do this, Please post an image. I need one for my image library. (we see this often)

So they plated it with platinum and sold it?

I haven't seen a platinum plated quarter before.
I've come across a couple of gold plated ones. The Home Shopping Network was selling them as if they had investment value. They do not. There is so little gold on them that the cost of recovering the gold from the coin is greater than the value of the gold. I assume the same is true for the platinum plated coins as well. Eventurally, they end up in circulation.
I kept the gold plated coins with the other oddities I've found. But they are only worth a quarter.

Just face value, but I would do what coop suggested you doing.

It's too light to be pure silver, so only other possibilities have to be considered.

Well, it wouldn't be "pure silver" in any case, would it? A legitimate US Mint product could be 900 fine coin silver, in which case it ought to weigh in at 6.25 grams, but I don't believe they handle 999 planchets that size.

I had a big load of the platinum plated sets that I got from a coin show for face value (dealer was a friend). I sold them all off by mint for $5 a set as "Birthday Sets."

I cant believe they can be sold as Platinum Sets when they are only plated. I have a friend who got duped in to buying a few sets of the gold and platinum and he brought them over to show me, when I told him they were plated, and basically only worth face value, he felt real bad. He wouldn't tell me how much he paid for them, but he said it was a lot more than face value.

He got gouged bad. It was sickening to watch this on TV night after night. My wife used to ask why I'd watch and scream and rant at the TV. I do believe they mentioned they were plated but the thrust of the promotion was in packaging that in my opinion looked like US mint packaging.

Coop,
I am sure I have one setting on my desk at home. Not sure why I save them out along with probably 50 impaired proofs. I have been meaning to take them back to the bank. I will send you one. I should have your address. You can do as much damage to it as you want.
Still Lookin

Thanks Steve. I just wanted to remove the plating from the reeded area to show the copper core. That way I can show what happened when they are plated. Thanks.
