If I am looking for the best condition/grade coin, am I better to look through the US Mint uncirculated sets or original bank rolls? I know some coins were known for weak strikes so a high grade example can be worth quite a bit. I've never sent anything in to grade but was curious where would be the best place to look for high grade coins. Thanks!

There is variability depending on specifics but as a rule of thumb all the best examples went into mint sets. Of course it might require a lot of looking to find a nice one in mint sets.

The rolled coins will have seen a whole lot more handling and will likely be of lesser grade as a result. Only the rolls occasionally sold directly by the Mint are actually created there; the others are stuffed into bags and shipped out. Even the Mint rolls still get the extra handling.

I would doubt the rolls sold by the mint are rolled there either. My bet is the packaging from Ballistic Bags to US Mint rolls is still contracted out.

It's a lot easy searching OBW rolls. With Lincolns, I crack it and have 50 examples to go through.

The only way I search mint sets is at shows or at my dealers, it's a PAIN to do because you have open them....which is hard to do without damaging the package on some issues. then I'm generally only interest in the Lincoln. It's a lot of effort to check one coin.

I find mint sets easier to check than rolls!

Of course I'm checking every denomination so I can see more coins at a time. If a dealer has a lot of one date I'll separate all the blue packs from the red packs and it goes much faster. The plastic protects them as I search. Of course you have to move the coins a little or you can't tell the scratches in the plastic from the ones oin the coins.

The mint sets are a little slower but a lot of the coins I search can't be found in rolls except rarely.

I have no sure clue myself; was trying to be optimistic.

Interesting question - I don't buy from the Mint so I don't know. Do they drop-ship from a fulfillment center contracted to handle this for them or do they ship from their own facilities? If the former, it's almost certain they also sub out the branded rolls.

I think everything the mint sells is shipped to the customer from the fulfillment center.
