Decided to do something today that I have been putting off for awhile now and that it to search the currency that I have on hand to see if there just might be a star note hiding out in my bills that I'll be moving out back to the wild.
I found the following:
1: $1 2106 series s/n F06661---* condition appears to be g = vg
2: $1 2009 series s/n A10429---* condition appears to be vf and better than above
3: $2 1976 series s/n E00528---* condition is likely less than g as numerous wrinkles are present
4: $5 2009 series s/n JA04059---* condition is comparable to above.
I plan on hanging onto these bills to see if I can come across something better.
A question though on saving * notes to your collection:
Do you save an example from each series on the whole (barring something real special) or ?

Quote: 1: $1 2106 series s/n F06661---* condition appears to be g = vg A 2106 note?! Wow, did you send Marty McFly in a DeLorean to get that for you? Is GW still on the obverse? Kidding, of course. Silly typos. Personally I keep any star notes $10 or less (almost) regardless of condition. If I were to get lots of $5 and $10 stars I might reconsider but I think only a couple have come through my hands over the years so it's not that much cash to tie up. I put the finest examples in my currency album and rotate out ones that aren't as pretty if I find a good upgrade. The ones not in my album are stored in a box. And yes, I save (at least) a note from each series.

I like to collect every print run and bank from each series. Some people only collect the rarest XF+ condition notes. Others like interesting serial number, error or star notes. The point is there are many different ways to collect paper money. How you choose to do so is 100% up to you.

I keep every star note regardless of condition and print run... You just don't see them everyday and they are fun to find... I have probably $150 in star notes that I have gotten out in the wild and plan on keeping every one of them hopefully to sell for a small profit in the future or at the very least have emergency spending money in case I need to...

I do plan on saving all the $1, @2, and $5 dollar star notes that happen into my possession. I showed my small collection to my wife and she commented that she never thought the * notes existed and really thought that all currency was perfect from the start. (Does she have a lot to learn.)
I am searching the $1 bills that I have waiting to be turned in higher value notes to see what the oldest notes I have. I'm also going to be looking at series and setting them aside. There are probably a lot of different things I could be looking at, but I don't want to become a bank.
It's going to be interesting to see what I come across tonight.

A guy from school I know spent a 2004-A $10 star note on concessions. I tried to explain to him that it was a star note and not very common, but he said he didn't care and spent it anyway. Oh well, I can't complain too much since I have a 2003 star note myself.

I've always had good luck with star notes. In my 7 years collecting (since I was 7) I've found a total face value of $66 in stars. $20 2004 $20 2004A $10 2004A (2X) $5 2006 $1 2009 Funny thing is, I don't hunt, and I never have much cash laying around.

My uncle has collected a lot longer than I have, and he's only found a few star notes total.

I got a $1 star note today. It's from a large run size, but I'm not sure if I should keep it or not since it's been circulated and probably has no premium.

I keep them all despite lack of rarity- I could never bring myself to spend anything of interest.

Like Banknotehunt said, everyone has their own manner of collecting. I do store away modern star notes every now and then but only the non-colorized variety and usually only semi-fancy and fancy SN star notes. I see $1 star notes the most and I wouldn't keep them unless they had a fancy serial. But that's just me because I am less concerned about their future value and more about whether I like the note aesthetically.
Older small size star notes are a different story. I look out for those especially. Gets me into a bidding frenzy when there's a low serial star note.
But If you can save star notes that are UNC and it won't hurt you, then go for it. Do it for the future collectors.

I found 2 20s, 2 10s and a 5 before I found a single 1.

For now, I'll keep it. If I can find a star note in better condition and/or a lower print run, then I'll replace the existing one I have now.
