She's got scars and a couple dings, but for $8.50 I like it. Can anyone help with attribution? Probably nothing special, just would like to learn!

O.K. Pytellc. A little research has me attributing this coin as die variety N-4 which has an R.1 (very common) rarity designation. The position of the pointed curl and the 8 is one of the diagnostic details of the N-4.
The detail sharpness is a solid VF-20 but the condition issues net this coin an F-12.
1852 N-4 R.1 20/12.

I thought this looked familiar. I just attributed an 1852 of mine, and it's the same imo. I have yours (and mine) as an N-15 which is an R.3. The curved top of the 5 doesn't quite line up with the curve at the bottom of the curl, it's just slightly left. Here's an example:

It could be an N-15 but I think N-22 is improbable because of the distance between the date and the denticles is different. And here Pytellc is the head scratching problem with attributing braided hair large cents. By 1840 the industrial revolution was in full swing and die making technology had greatly advanced since the early days of the mint. By this time dies become fairly uniform and sometimes the only difference between one die and the next is the placement of the date.

this coin looks to have die cracks on obverse in the right areas and the date position looks right for n-22. If you really want to know for sure you can send it to Bob Grellman. He wrote the book on these coins. He charges 1 dollar per coin.
