Hi, I'm from the PCGS forum. I decided to come over here, because most of the members there do not like me. And I can't figure out how to make them like me. Hopefully I can start fresh here. I am decided whether to buy this coin. Here's the description: Gold half-escudo, 1745-AJ, VG10. KM361.1, .917 gold, .0498 oz. Philip V. Crowned "M" mintmark (Madrid). 1/16 of a "doubloon". Nice little historical gold coin. Past provenance indicated the coin was salvaged from a shipwreck, though this is not particularly noticeable, nor was the name of the wreck given. You can't 'make' anyone like you. You just have to be yourself and feel your way around, so to speak. It helps to go slow and listen more than you speak. By leaving out the personal comments or feelings and sticking to the facts and topic (coins) you have less chance of 'offending' anyone.
About the coin: it sounds like a good deal to me.

Tbirde56, thank you for your response. I have gotten varied responses about the coin. I have seen a coin in 1745 VF condition go for 145. However on another coin forum someone said the coin doesn't look VG and is G at best. This person said it was listed at 50 dollars but in his opinion is only worth its bullion value or 25 dollars. On the other hand, a reputable dealer at https://www.coinvault.com (Not the TV show) has told me it is a good deal, but he didn't want to see the picture. I sent him the pic anyway. On the PCGS forum, people of course defended the dealer who is selling it to me saying he OVERGRADED it. Very confusing. I have gotten PM's from people saying the coin has no luster and no eye appeal and is junk, and PM's from people saying go for it. I Just don't know what to do By the way , I am doing a trade for this. Is it worth trading a PCGS MS69 1/10 oz american eagle for it tbirde56? Thanks Edited by OldGoldKing

Beauty, or value, is in the eye of the beholder. Of course, you're always going to get differing opinions. That's the purpose of slabbing a coin. But for those that are not you just have to form your own opinion. That's what it boils down to. That implies you need enough information, knowledge and experience to form an opinion. So if you don't or you have doubts then the best thing is to pass on any deals until you do. Rather than ask everyone you know, which is bothersome and will get you a dozen different opinions and still leave you confused, look on ebay.com and other web sites and price lists for the going rate on similar pieces. It may take a while to do that but we're actually talking about months or years, or actually a lifetime of collecting, in order to have enough experience to 'know' the answers to these questions. If you're not concentrating on a certain series of coins or countries then you may spend all your time trying to accumulate the needed knowledge. I'd suggest concentrating on one area and developing a knowledge base on those coins and then trying to apply some of that to the next series you take aim at. It's a lifelong learning process and you have to patiently do your homework to find the answers and its rarely by asking everyone else. Good luck! That coin is a decent deal, in my opinion, not a great deal. The main thing is NOT that it is gold but that the coin itself, its design and history, interests you. Do NOT collect gold coins because they are gold. If you do then you are likely only a bullion investor and not a coin collector. |

Welcome to Coin Community! In my opinion, the price is a little high. Due to the amount of wear on the bust, I'd hesitate to call it VG, though the rest of the coin looks good. In my opinion, I see it as a G6. If there were any detail remaining in the bust at all, I could go VG. I definitely don't see a VG10 in that coin. If it were me, I'd wait for a better one to come along. I would be willing to pay $50-60 for that coin. Hope this helps. |

Why are you looking to buy this coin is it for the coin and the beauty of it - is it to fill a hole in a set - is it for a gift.
all of these will determine price along with grading and ore content.

For the beauty of it. To my horror, after being a good member there for over a year, I found out today I was banned. I can't buy the coin anyway now, since I can't PM the person. |
