Only took me 15 years to actually get one. Septimus Severus (193-211 AD) Denarius struck around 200-201 AD, so it's 2nd/3rd century cross over piece. On the reverse is the supreme God Jupiter depicted standing left, holding a spear and a thunder bolt, with an eagle at his feet. Doesn't look all that great on the scan, looks nicer in person. Not because it's a particulary aesthetic design (the obverse definately not), but more the relief and execution of the piece. I can finally see the aura around ancients. The reason why I've prolonged buying one for so long is because I saw it was a slippery slope... Alot of people collect Roman coins by Emperor (this is where Nero, Cladius, Caligula and all the other popular and notorious Emperors usually find their way into a collection). I however have decided to collect these coins by deity, or gods if you prefer. Generally i'll only collect the important deities (the Olympians) and not the personifications, i.e Rome, Victory or Fortune.

Very interesting piece! Glad you posted the photo so we all could see it. I shy away from the Ancients due to the tremendous amount of counterfeiting. I think my entire collection consists of 2 or 3 coins I have purchased through the years. I like your idea of collecting the deities and avoiding the self promotion of the rulers of the time. Great idea!

If it is not too personal and considering a long wait for you to obtain it, What price range was it in?
If it is listed in Krause no need to reply.

I don't usually state what I paid for things, but if someone asks then I am quite willing to do so. Price was £37 which is about 88 Aussie dollars. ($67 US)
So it's not a bank breaking puchase.

I wasn't spending ages actually debating or waiting for this particular coin. I was just putting off buying an ancient coin of any type, because I knew once i'd bought one, i'd want another, and another, and another.

I usually don't ask how much someone pays for a coin, but when they say they have been tracking a coin for 15 years - it is often rare and an "bank breaker" I am pleased for you that it was affordable.

It always amazes me how inexpensive many of these ancients are - even ones with excellent details. Thanks so much for posting the pic. I love the idea of collecting by deity. Should make for a very interesting (and history-filled) collection.

I've seen a nice denarius with Minerva on the back. I forget which Emperor it was, might have been Domitian.
