I am very partial to many of the older Great Britain designs especially the one you have chosen to share. Another favorite of mine is the Netherlands issues with young Wilhelmina from 1892 thru 1897. I am really impressed with that portrait but not quite sure why? Guess it is because it appears to be like everyones young lady next door as there is absolutely nothing on the profile that says Royalty or Queen? One of my favorites, thats for sure! Also feel free to make arrangements to ship any likeness of the florin, in any grade, in your photo as Indiana MOST DEFINITELY needs examples like that!

For those of us that do not have a clue, how about a little description of what-when-where.

That would be a UK Gothic Florin. Mine is from 1864 and die number 48 if you are into such things. I'm not. ;). About the size of a US half dollar if you are not familiar with them. A little info from Chard http://www.24carat.co.uk/1852gothic...inframe.htmlThere is also a Gothic Crown but it is way out of my price league. ;)

Another of my favorite world coins (this one from my Birth Year Set). It is a 1966 The Gambia 4 Shilling Proof. Not a lot of them made but not a lot of people want them so they aren't expensive. I just love the croc on the reverse.

Stujoe, I’m not familiar with foreign coins but the first one you displayed is quite stunning. It looks like a fine engraving rather than a minted coin. Do you mind disclosing a ballpark value? I would not mind starting a world collection with something that beautiful![:p] Your photography is outstanding. I am equipped to photograph and scan coins but have no idea what to do. I played around with our scanner (an HP Business quality scanner) and everything was fuzzy. I have two excellent photo printers and two digital cameras, one Sony and one JVC and a handful of photo programs. The Sony is 5.1-mega- pixel and the JVC is 4.0 (it's a few years old) I bought the Sony Mavica for XMAS this year. It has a setting for close up photos. Any help you could post or PM would be appreciated, or perhaps you could recommend a book. I would love to post some of my coins sometime, but only with quality close ups. Thanks, Mike

Hi Mike. I am terrible with remembering what I paid for coins. Sometimes I keep email traffic about it but this one was all done via PM and I can't remember the price. It was probably around $100 give or take 20. I bought it from a UK'er when the exchange rates were a lot more favorable than they are today. Thanks for the compliments on the pictures. My skills are average and they don't always come out good. If you have a camera with a macro function, you can usually get decent pics with a few tries. After that, it is all mostly keeping the camera steady (preferably mounted) and adjusting your lighting to get the look right. I have gone from a Fuji Finepix 2400 (the croc picture) to a Nikon Coolpix 4300 (the Florin). Both your cameras are probably much better than mine. If you try a few things and post some pics, some of us might be able to give some pointers. I learned a lot from this article: http://www.uscents.com/articles/DCP/DCP002.htmand my setup looks quite a bit similar. It was home-made too. Here is also an article that talks about lighting: http://www.coinworld.com/news/011705/BW_0117.aspI have seen people get good results from a scanner but I have never been able to accompish that. My scanner just won't do it. Some scanners can do 3d objects great but mine can't at all.

If Stujoe didn't know how much he paid for the coin, then you'd be thinking the best person to ask is the seller no? Unfortunately I can't remember how much I sold it to you for! So neither of us can remember. Price range on these things for a decent one (GVF upto EF) is about £80-£120 for the common date issues, particularly the 1880s which are the cheapest of the range. I'll let you translate that into $'s because I'm out of sync with the exchange rates at the moment.

I think the exchange rate is about £1 = $1.70.

There he is! I still don't know and can't seem to find out how much it was.
I am thinking it must have been much more expensive than I remember. Probably about a hundred bucks more expensive! It's embarassing but I have a poor memory for stuff like that.
Edited to add:
I thought it was my second most expensive coin and placed the initial guess at an amount in that range but it actually must be my most expensive coin.

Stujoe, I was looking forward to seeing your favourite coin designs, BUT! neither the UK Gothic florin nor the Gambia 4/- croc pictures will display . Very strange - every other pic on the page displays OK, including your avatar, but not one of the 4 you posted - even when I refreshed the page. Oh well, maybe it'll work next time I look! Regards, yoyo PS I don't have a favourite coin - there are far too many absolutely stunning works of the engraver's art out there for me to ever be able to pick just one ... yoyo

I have fixed the references. When CP went down, all the references went with it. I have them up on my other site, though, and they should be fixed. Thanks for letting me know!

Don't worry Stu if I ever need another I can get one, afterall supply of them is more plentiful in these parts. Nicely toned ones are difficult though, many are dubiously white.
