Bought this off ebay because I really liked the toning. Looking at the coin under the microscope (visible in the pics below) there are hairlines that at first glance made me feel like the coin had been cleaned, but, looking closer, I do not think so. On both obv and rev the lines are parallel and are consistent on the entire coin. Notice on the reverse the lines move from NW to SE, even between the outer wheat and the rim of the coin and inside the devices. Opinions-cleaned. not cleaned or something else. Also any opinions on the grade would be appreciated.

I'm not 100% sure from these images, but it bears mentioning that at some point the lines become too consistently parallel to be brushing in most cases. Generally the Mint works to a higher standard of consistency when they polish than when some dolt brushes a coin. I lean towards these being polishing lines.

SsDd could be correct, but I am leaning towards the woodie effect. That happened when the alloy was not properly mixed and the different metals toned differently. I am pretty sure that is what it is. That is a very nice coin too. Beautiful.

The dotted area in front of Lincoln looks like textile toning. Don't know if that's a possibility with LWC though?

Side question... how does that true woody effect happen on lincolns?

Because before 1983, us cents were copper with a little zinc. If the zinc and copper did not mix properly then the coins metals tone differently. THis is impossible on modern cents. I am trying not to hijack this thread.

Keep in mind we don't know if that is what is affecting this coin. Just a theory.

Does it have cartwheel luster or is it just flashy?
