is this caused by acid or a washing machine washed chemical of some sort? looks very odd tho to be that it seems like something else differently.

Probably a parking lot find that made the incuse areas that exposed the zinc and now it is rotting and deteriorating. If someone had put acid on it, then it would be a copper Hershey's kiss wrapper. Very spendable.

It's crazy how once that zinc hits the air how badly it rots. Brings up the question why make a cent with zinc. I wonder how many cents litterally dissolve in a year

Great question but I do not know the life span of these Zinc cents.I know there is a figure.
My question. When and who decides the cents is too far gone? I have seen some cents that are about to crumble in your hand and/or beyond being a passable cent.
With these cents I throw them back into circulation. Why should I take the loss.
So who does?

The banks turn in all coin that is unsuitable for further use. They are reimbursed. The same holds true for the counting rooms.
