This 1944-S Winged Head (Mercury) dime was struck on a Cracked Planchet. It was found my Mike Strub of Michigan while searching through silver dimes. Cracks like this are the result of brittleness of the planchet due to improper alloy mix, contaminants and other factors. Edited by koinpro 05/02/2015 1:11 pm

Ken, every error you post is like an image with greater saturation than anyone else is capable of.

Fantastic pictures. Question. Was the planchet already cracked or did it happen because of the strike? I know, a lame question but, I love to learn something every day.

SsuperDdave, Is that good or bad? LOL Saturation is all in the software. I think it is simply based on the choice of the photographer/image editor. Seems to me that Coop uses a lot of saturation. I'm never sure if this is good or bad for my images. LMK Quote: Ken, every error you post is like an image with greater saturation than anyone else is capable of.

I've always wondered how many people just get rid of coins like that due to the way the look. Nice photos.

Ken,
Good sample of cracked planchet. Is that how the actual coin appears after applying saturation?

macmercury, Actually, this coin was more colorful than this. I toned it down in Photoshop so the error would stand out better. What I try to do in Photoshop is match the coin. Often that means cracking up the saturation a bit but more often than not, I have to reduce the saturation in most raw images. For some reason I get a lot of saturation. Better a lot than too little. I can always reduce.

Wow. Forgive me; that went over everyone's head. I was making an analogy, in that the errors Ken is posting are so strong by comparison to the smaller but similar ones usually seen are similar to identical pics where one has a stronger hue that the other.
