Can you tell me if this is a defective planchet. On the obverse it is on the right side rim 3rd star counting from the bottom up. On the reverse it is on the tip of the E and next to the R in AMERICA. Thanks for any input.

I'm inclined to agree with Ken. With those spots being next to each other on the coin, one is led to think that a pinching action of some sort caused the effect, and a true planchet error wouldn't smear the E. A true planchet problem of that nature should (not always) go right through the rim and you'd be able to see that.

Thank you. Yes, it was the smear of the E that I was most interested in. I didn't know if that was some sort of mint error or PMD. Thanks for your thoughts and explanation.
