What would cause this kind of error? I bought this last year and just tucked it away.

how does the edge look? Almost looks like it was freed from a coin enclosure

The reeded edge is damaged where the rim is flattened. Maybe you can glean something from these pictures. These were taken with a flash.

Although it is possibly just PMD, you should keep it as an odd item.

If the area isn't scratches, then it could be a rolled thin planchet error! What does it weight?
