In your opinions, what is the best book to buy to look for error coins? I go through ALOT of rolls of pennies but I do not know what to look for besides doubling. I pretty much just seperate the copper and pull the wheaties and upgrade my books

If you're looking for erros that have value, you don't really need a book...anything that's obvious and is a genuine mint error would be worthwhile. Any error you would need help identifying either isn't an error or isn't something most people would bother payig a premium for.

When it comes to "doubling" you're talking about die varieties. That subject has a number of useful books, because in collectible doubling there are a number of things to know about.

Yes then die varieties books are what I'm looking for. When I search rolls I only really look at the lettering for doubling and the date and move on to the next coin.

I don't happen to have copies available right now, but my book is a good basic book for beginners to get used to what's out there to look for. It's called "Looking Through Lincoln Cents" - I'm sure you can find a copy with a search on the internet.

There are others, but few deal with the entire series as an overview and center attention on die varieties. Dave Lange's book is good, but it doesn't address the die varieties. Same thing with Sol Taylor's book.

Lucifer, one thing I noticed while going thru 5000 cents is the more you become familer with the design of the coin the better off you are. Once you get the different designs sorted out, the double dies & errors will jump out at you.

Lucifer, I think Chuck was being quite modest with his description of his book being for beginners. Plus probably not wanting to promote it too much either.

Having said that, his book is fantastic, and I think every cent collector would benefit from it. It is detailed with great pictures and I think it far surpasses what a beginning collector would need. If you don't have it, find it. It's by far the best book from THE expert in the field in my opinion.

Look at it this way, if the author of the book doesn't have a copy in his store, that should tell you the demand on them.
