Emperors Warior?copper Cleaning Question

Bob Levi Valued Member Canada 488 Posts	Posted 05/04/2015 11:30 pm One more I have been wondering... so I am fairly certain after searching stock photos for a long while that this is a 54 AD Emperors warrior. I have soaked it in oil for about a month with scrubbings weekly. When I first got this coin it was so crusted black that you could barley tell there was a face on it. as I am starting to get some shine on some of the spots on the head I wonder how far you would go with cleaning. I assume you don't want to go to the point where it is clearly cleaned and shiny. as I am starting to get past the dark buildup I am wondering how much to take off. Is it good to keep a rustic feel to show its age? Report this Post to the Staff

pishpash Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 3626 Posts	Posted 05/05/2015 06:25 am The last thing you want is the copper or bronze showing through. This means you have gone through the patina and are down to bare metal. I wouldn't do any more to the obverse, at least for now. There are spots on the reverse that I would keep brushing, where it appears thick and stay away from where the metal is showing through. Report this Post to the Staff

There is more to the cleaning than I had expected from the description on their site. This was helpful because I was not sure where to stop on the cleaning either. I have been soaking them in distilled water and just rubbing the dirt off with my fingers so far. I might try to get some scraping tools to see the secrets beneath some of the gunk harder gunk on a few of them. Your coin looks really good. pishpash Pillar of the Community United Kingdom 3626 Posts	Posted 05/17/2015 05:46 am wampdog you need to invest in a cheap toothbrush and or bamboo rather than your fingers. With the toothbrush, cut down the bristles to about half their length, it stiffens them a bit. It doesn't matter whether they are a bit ragged. Report this Post to the Staff
