Yes. It's still legal tender. Someone at the bank probably claimed it already and were covering up with some excuse.

The Federal Reserve Banks destroy high-denomination when they come in, by virtue of an order of the Board of Governors removing them from circulation. Whether this obliges Federal Reserve System Member Banks to send them in for destruction I do not know.

That would have been a sweet acquisition.

Ouch. It really hurts when you know something of value is going to be destroyed. Unless, of course, WheatBack is right. If so, sleep well knowing it found a good home.

I'm crying for you. Why would they say they had it if they weren't willing to give it up? Odd. Mean.

Did you press the issue?
I certainly would have, because that's worth a substantial premium.

Yea I tried really hard to get it but they were getting mad and prolly woulda kicked me out........that and I'm a crh and I asked for halves and they had $120 in rolls so you know what they did? They checked every single one for silver in a back room and had me wait. I'm going to bring them thousands of dollars of halves I hate them so much and they can't do anything. Plus I did go to several other banks and they told me as well thy wouldn't have been able to give it out

As I understand it, there's paperwork the bank needs to write up to return obsolete and damaged notes for destruction; if they've already filled in and lodged the paperwork, then they are obliged to return the note. I'm assuming that's why they said they couldn't. Or, there may simply be a bank policy with regard to re-issuing such notes - a matter of internal bank regulations, rather than law. Which, depending on the corporate culture of the bank, could be just as difficult for the tellers to try to get around just to do you a personal favour, though. The trick is to get the tellers to keep such odd/unusual notes aside for you before they fill in the paperwork. That way there's no problem with them re-issuing it to you for face. You'd even be doing them a favour, helping them avoid the paperwork. But for that, you really will need to find a bank where at least some of the tellers are friendly to you. It may help their friendliness if you don't tell them you're a CRH. It's their job to dispense and receive money for people who need that service. It is not their job to subsidize people with weird hobbies. Quote: I'm going to bring them thousands of dollars of halves I hate them so much and they can't do anything. Yes, they can. They are not obliged to take your money from you. If you're not an account-holding customer, they can tell you to go away and never come back. Even if you are an account-holding customer, they can ask you to close your account with them, then tell you to go away and never come back. Neither are particularly good PR moves by a bank, but we're talking things they "can" and "can't" do, not things they are likely to do. But make yourself enough of a nuisance to a business (any business, not just a bank), and they might just decide that throwing the book at you is worth the PR hit they'll take.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

I have an account there and Wells Fargos policy is that they always take coins as long as they're rolled.

Why would they tell you they had a $1,000 bill when they were planning to destroy it?

I asked for old bills or anything interesting and they told me they had a $1000 bill! I always ask for old bills at banks every time I'm there
