I'm not planning on selling my collection any time soon but one day I will. My goal has always been to have enough coins so that when I retire I could open a small shop. I thought it would be a great way to still enjoy my hobby and also keep busy and make some money too.

My question is: Given current market conditions for coins, what is the best way to sell your coins to get the most value from them? Online auctions seem like an obvious choice. Perhaps starting your own website to avoid fees. Would you dump them all on the market at once or slowly sell them off? Is it worth certifying them through a TPG? Do you find you get better value selling coins individually, in lots or perhaps even full sets?

Thanks in advance.

Unless you're a big seller like Colonial Acres then you probably won't get much traffic through your own website. ebay is good but they get the profit more so than you do. My experience is that lots always sell at a discount to individual items. The main exception to that rule is bullion value coins (ie low grade silver from the 60's; NOT SMLs) where larger lots may be worthwhile because of the way the shipping works out. Sell slowly. If you dump everything at once then people can't afford to buy it and that reduces the competition on your items. Simply stated: For example, Buyer A has a budget of $100/month to spend. You sell everything in 1 month you get $100 of their money. You sell everything over a year and you get $1,200 of their money. Assuming they want what you're selling, you have the best price on the market etc etc etc.

Depending on your location you could try getting a table a a flea market or coin show.

Decent websites do cost money, unless you can somehow avoid it.

It depends on the kind of collection you have.

If you have a nice, high grade collection auctions, a website or ebay with near trends buy it now/best offer can be effective, maybe the occasional coin show.

If you are going with an average collection midgrade collection, mixed method ebay and coin shows are probably best.

If low grade, ebay auction or host event for novice collectors, probably hard to break even unless you have massive volume eg. Asyn.

I am saying this based on observation of some high grade sellers and ownexperience with low/mid-grade selling. I am up overall, but that is largely due to some good buy/sell of mid/high/nclt coins. Not counting time of course.

The remainder of what my kids don't choose for themselves,
will be will be sold through a leading numismatic specialist auction house.
They already have the legal power to sell them right now, and keep the proceeds for their own benefit.
