I've seen several of these half dollars come along and they seem to (in better states) have this dusky look to them. What's up w/ that? From the looks of it, this one is an AU example no? but dusty/dusky looking...

Indeed. This one does appear to be Good AU and I've seen quite a few of them like this. As to why, I don't know either.

I saw a couple in Mint State on ebay last week, very nice coins. I think they sold for $800-900 each, if my memory is correct

I bought this one for $251. It was described as a " Barber half dollar".

The seller's imagery is partly to blame for the look of the coin. He's missed the focus completely - the background is what's sharp, not the coin. Don't expect it to resemble the image much, in hand. It'll be darker. That may or may not be a good thing, but I lean towards optimism regarding the surfaces.

All the same, this one needs to be eligible for a righteous AU slab to justify the money paid. AU Details won't get you there. Even if the surfaces are cool I don't know if the rim dings on the bottom of the obverse get you there either. This one's going to be iffy.

Technical details probably make AU55.

Well I liked the coin and as you point out, the seller does himself no good deed w/ the bad photography. I looked at the details and saw/see an AU coin and for what I've paid, it could easily be worth a good bit more judging from the Heritage PAs. I'm optimistic Dave!

On another note, when do I have enough posts to be able to see/use the buy sell trade? or whatever it's called? I still don't find it on the front page.

And... I sent in an avatar but it's not been posted for me as of yet. Is it because I used a real pic of myself? does it just have to be coins?

thanks, mitch

edit: found were to post avatars... but still ask: do they/must they be coins? coin related?

I have an 1837 with a similar look. I've always wondered what caused it. Mine was in an ANACS VF30 holder

The guy has a good return policy so you're little out of pocket should the worst come to the worst. And if it will slab at grade, you're well ahead. You can expect color similar to cipster's, and I see nothing untoward about it. It's just how they aged. Like Seated stuff that nearly turns black, and is therefore able to become the "Circulation Cameos" which some of us love so much.

We would really prefer that it be numismatic in nature. Otherwise, it'd be a decision at the moment for us, and lack of optimism is warranted.

My Reeded Edge Half does not possess the crustiness from others I have seen, it was an impulse buy and in am quite happy with it...until I find a variety or "O" mint version.

So question is, will the rim dings/bumps kill this for an AU coin? In hand it's a smooth gray color w/nearly no wear on the high points... look at the eagle's wing joints. On Heritage a coin like this gets AU58 pretty often.

Sorry I'm a bit late to the thread, but I thought I should post mine. I actually thought it may be counterfeit, until the circulation cameo was explained to me. It's quite dark on mine.

I don't think the slight rim bumps will prevent grading the coin show to be a strong AU example.

Mine has a great circulated cameo look but not near the detail of your coin.
