I am not understanding many of the statements about Lincoln Cents that I have been reading on here. The most common statement is that any other color on a cent other than red or brown usually means that a cent has been improperly cleaned. I am new to collecting them and would like some information so I can better understand what is going on. I have pulled Lincoln cents that where in BU rolls from my bank that had multiple colors. Did I misunderstand something or get something out of context?

I didn't want it to seem like I am singling anybody out because that is not my intent, but yeah this is the thread that has me wondering. I hope my question does not offend anyone, if it does I am truly sorry. It is an honest question by a coin collecting newbie that is looking at some of the coins in his album that were pulled from circulation after reading the thread and trying to get a better understanding. Since I know next to squat about copper coins.

I do not think it is offensive. It is a very good question and deserving of its own topic.
Seeing the original discussion can provides more background, for those who want it.

IMO There are more ways for a Lincoln Cent to acquire differnt colors. Not just cleaning. A coin can get color/tone from how and where it is stored. -If it is stored with or around certain chemicals. -Heat, cold and humidity can cause different toning. -Impurities in the copper planchets can impact how the coin tones. - if the coins were in paper rolls or canvas bags for a long period of time. But I would have to agree that if a coin was cleaned , there is a good chance that coin can will get colors other than the red or brown that most copper coins will be. Again this is just my opinion.

The best thing I can offer you regarding toning, especially on Lincolns, as a link to a place little-known around here: http://100greatestrainbows.com/index.htmlIt'll change what you believe about toning on many issues, not just Lincolns.

If you are referencing a particular coin/coins, could you provide an image? I love copper coins & this topic holds great interest. Thanks.

Ill post to this! After filling 1934-date with all Red Lincolns. I felt as if they didn't have enough character. So for 1909-1933 I will be trying to buy as much blue/purple/iridescent toned/colored lincolns I can find. I have a thing for wildly toned lincolns and SuperDave posted that website!

Here is my 1926 NGC I just cracked out. Couldn't get my money out fast enough as I only paid 30$ for it.
