I agree with the AU details. The coin was cleaned most likely polished. Look at the bell and portrait close and you will see that the high points appear to be melted. Cross hatch hairlines are prevelent on many of the surface areas and the bottom of the bell is pretty hacked up

First, I want to thank everyone who has commented. I am trying to learn what to look for when grading coins, and in the process I am being forced to learn how to take decent pictures of coins. So far I suck at both, but I know I can get better at pictures. With that said, I would like to upload 600 dpi scans of the same coin, and see if I could get some comments on wether my bad pictures are the cause of confusion, or if I just don't see what I am supposed to be seeing on the coin. It doesn't look polished, it is marked and scratched heavily. Did the toning occur after the cleaning? I picked up my entire set of Franklins from junk silver boxes, so I am not trying to defend a purchase, I just need to learn. Thanks for your patience!

The reason I say "details" is because the finish of the coin is very dull and smooth and looks "off" for the amount of wear. The shine in the first picture looks unnatural.

If you compare these AU 50 coins, you can see they still have some of that "sparkle" and cartwheel luster. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1952-D-1952...em541e8b4622

Your new photos makes the coin look better. but also washed out and no life to it. but hey, it's ok for coming out of a junk box.
