Guess what I found in my grandparents' house. I think some of it could be pretty interesting - there are a lot of coins in here from the 1920s (shillings, florins), and a few from earlier - shillings from 1825, 1826, a 1911 Australian shilling, a coin that looks like a shilling but which I can't seem to identify from 1856 and an 1849 florin, as well as two 3d pieces from (I think) 1833 and 1901. I don't really know if any of it is valuable. Anyone see anything they like? Sorry for the picture quality, I can do close-up pictures of individual coins if requested.

Also, hi - new member here. If this is the wrong section, I apologise and request that a moderator move the thread!

I am only seeing one photo.

If you want to have the coins identified and evaluated, then you should post them one at a time, or at least in small groups of similar coins.

I'm sure a lot of us will like all your coins but I hope this wasn't an offer to sell. That would be against the rules.

Maybe this link will point you in the right direction.

Thanks for the pointers. It's just such a large and varied collection that I don't really want to have to do everything individually - doing 100+ different coins could be a nightmare to put up pictures for! I suspect only the silver coins are actually valuable, so I'll do a few photos of those for ID/evaluation. I'm making a list of everything in that photo as we speak.

There should be 5 photos, no idea why you are only seeing one - I see all of them fine.

And no, that wasn't an invitation to buy, just to incite discussion - I already know the rules about selling :)

There's quite a bit of silver there - the British silver coins before 1920 are sterling silver (92.5% fine) and those dated from 1920 - 1946 are 50% silver. I think I can see a US Mercury dime there (90% silver) and quite a nice looking Victorian farthing. There are quite a few tokens including the Sheffield Tramways one, which I'm sure would interest some collectors but I know very little about them. Most of the non-British coins in the selection appear to be relatively recent pre-Euro coins from Western Europe, which are of very little value but fun to keep as souvenirs.

About the same here; I see three generic placeholders and two images. However, if you right-click (or whatever you do to get the context menu) on any of the first three and choose to view the image in a new tab or window, you should be able to see them all ...

Thanks, chrisild! Clicking on the boxes works in Mozilla.

lutomlin, my best advice is for you to take your time. If you are under some pressure to sell the collection, it will require a bit of work to get a fair price for it. If you can take the time, you might find you enjoy the collection enough to keep it and organize it for yourself and for the next generation.

Thanks for the insight guys. @Buddy I had already come to a similar conclusion. I have made that list of things but I can see it taking forever to sell; so much so that there is no point in doing so right now, I don't have that sort of time. I've sorted it a bit and decided that it makes sense to keep it. Maybe I shall find it in a few years' time and it'll be a conversation starter :)

I looked up the US coins on Numismedia Fair Market Value.

The 1903 cent is worth from $1 up to $20.

The 1944 dime is worth from $2 up to $5. (silver)

The 1983 dime is worth from 12 cents up to 75 cents.

Prices given are in US dollars and are mostly just a guide. If you were to sell them to a dealer you could expect to get about 60 per cent of those prices.

The value is dependent upon the condition of the coins.

For instance, the 1983 dime in rather poor condition is listed as being worth 12 cents and I honestly cannot imagine anyone paying any premium for that coin in that condition. So...make of it what you will.

It does seem like you have a rather fun collection started.

Splurge on some proper coin storage (Mylar flips) and a little coin notebook. You can easily enjoy looking at them or rearranging them and maybe even adding to the collection.

Enjoy.
