I picked up a 1847 Braided Hair Large Cent and want to hear what the CCF Members thought of her in comparison to (old small white) ANACS.

Thank you for your interest!

It's a beauty. Looks like an overdate, a lot going on in the date area. Maybe N-1, and I'll just guess MS64, I'm bad at grading the higher grades.

Appears to be a RPD. Not sure on Newcomb.

I've got it at AU55. Nice one.

N-1, a pretty terrific repunch in the grand scheme of things. Hope they didn't mistake strike weakness for wear and gave it the 63-ish it deserves. Think it's lacquered.

I don't know much with American numismatics but that is just a gorgeous piece of milk chocolate! I think that SsuperDdave ht it on the head at MS-63, as I commented in the other thread I just love the date RP. I think I saw this variety in the Red Book?

Here I come to rain on the parade. I agree with vermontensium's grade of AU-55. The coin exhibits high point wear and a weak strike.
This coin is a great example of the N-1 die marriage. The triple punched date shows clearly and I like the color. Fabulous coin.
1847 N-1 R.2 55/55.

I was very much inclined to grade the coin MS - that is how good the first impression is. On closer inspection, however, some wear is evident on the high points so AU55, possibly AU58 seems more appropriate.
Nice coin anyway you look at it.

Have to lean to weak strike AU55 as I see it.
As Dave said I also think it's lacquered.

MS62 or EAC55. Very nice coin, love the sharp details of the RPD.

I also have it at AU58. For those who think it was lacquered can you state what you are seeing to come to that assessment. Is it the reverse color variation?

I have heard that lacquering coins in the past was acceptable...what about now? The label does not identify and "details".

Partly that, and partly how the light plays so brightly off of relatively-flat surfaces like denticles and leaves. Further, even if the coin isn't Mint State (a discussion for another day) I'd expect to see a bit of luster, which the lacquer will dull a bit.

And all completely subjective, nothing I could present a factual case for.
