Got this one not long ago and was happy it is much better in-hand than on sellers pictures. Also, it is a scarcer 1808 variety, S-278, R-3.

Areas of weak strike in fron of bust and corresponding area on the reverse seem not uncommon on S-278's.

Some ticks here tan there and some 'chatter' in front of bust, otherwise nice, smooth tan surfaces, no porosity corrosion or verdigris.

How would you (EAC) grade her?

A great Classic Head GERMANICVS. I love the Classic Heads just because they're so difficult to collect. This coin does show the characteristic uneven strike of the S-278s.
The chatter in front of the face is distracting but moderate. The planchet is exceptionally smooth for a Classic Head and has a nice nut brown color. I would net grade the coin down one grade for the chatter but give it a grade up for the smooth planchet and color.
I will give the coin an EAC 15 or a VF-20 market grade.
1808 S-278 R.3 15/15.

A VF20 from me ( a 25 'wannabe' )... a nice cent - as yours usually are :) ... Not sure what the mark near the base of the 1 is - maybe nothing.

Tough to get a nice planchet in this year. VF20+.Are you sure its a 278? The first star is pretty prominent or is this an early die state?

Thank you everybody for your comments. Very much appreciated.
Yes, these Classic Heads sure are difficult to get with clean planchets. I still need a decent 1813 and 1814 for my collection.

panzaldi, regarding attribution as S-278, I am fairly certain this is correct as S-278 is the only of the three 1808 varieties where the top leaf fully covers the base of the final S in 'States'. In S-277 and S-279 this is not the case.
Not sure of the die state, however. It seems to be an early die state as no breaks are evident.
Striking weakness seems to be fairly common on S-278. here is another showing similar peripheral weakness.

Sorry guys...I confused the S277 with the 278. The 277 is the 12 star. My bad
