Please help me to grade this coin, thank you. The flip is marked UNC but I know it's not.

I was looking in a photo grade book and it does indeed have UNC details from what I can see, but I am afraid of the black spots and how to remove them if possible. This coin also has die cracks (grrrr). Thank you.

Cleaned cleaned cleaned. What isn't showing up in the photo are the hairlines likely from said cleaning. AU Details.

I don't think it is a "bad coin", but I think it has been improperly cleaned. It was probably "dipped" in Jewel Luster about 25 years ago and was not rinsed properly. The bad thing is where the dark spots are now there is probable pitting under those spots.

There is only a few things you can do:

1). Send it in for NGC Conservation efforts
2). Dip the coin again and hope for the best.
3). Put it in your type set and forget about it.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

are these scanned copies? I can't ever grade accurately from scans.....do you not have a camera? I use my iphone and it takes excellent shots...especially when paired with a loupe.

The coin looks AU....hard to tell whether it's cleaned or not...and hard to tell whether that is just toning or something yucky in the black spots. A photo instead of a scan would reveal the truth.

Does look UNC to me. As to MS-xx, can't say without close ups.

Can a coin have UNC or MS details after having been cleaned?

I'll revise, UNC details cleaned. Good coin for an album! I would not send this in to get graded.

Based on the better pics I'd suggest sending it to NGC for conservation, grading and slabbing. You'll be way ahead in the long run if you, or your heirs, decide to part with the coin.
