Cool! I recently learned about these in a Littleton Coin Company magazine... I almost bought one and then realized that LCC sucks. Anyway, very nice coin!

I've always wondered why the reverse of this coin was not made to more closely resemble a Morgan dollar reverse.

Nice example of the Old SF Mint silver dollar! Thanks for sharing!
This particular issue might hold the record for "Least Artistic Innovation" among all of the modern US commemorative coins - both the obverse and reverse feature a design copied from a previous US Mint issue.
The highly recognizable reverse is basically a copy of the reverse of the famous silver dollar designed by George T. Morgan, and the obverse features a view of the San Francisco Mint that first appeared on a US Mint bronze medal dating from the early 1970s. The depiction of the Old SF Mint building was designed by Sherl J. Winter.
On a positive note, the 2006 silver dollar features a strong strike that brings out the full details of Winter's original design. The bronze medals, in contrast, are notorious for their weak strikes - the Mint building is often very "mushy" and lacking in detail.

I certainly agree, it should hold the record for "Least Artistic Innovation", but I believe that is what makes it so appealing and of course the strong strike.

After picking up an Alabama half at the CSNS show a few weeks ago and realizing the reverse design of an eagle over a shield looked an awful lot like the RFK half I was going to make a post regarding "borrowed" or similar designs of the regular issue commems but I am sure YOU could go even deeper with your knowledge of medals and non sanctioned issues. Don't get me started on the number of Ellis Island style torches on more than 5 modern commems.
