Hello,

A bullion dealer friend of mine picked this up in a damaged TPG holder.
I have my doubts and I am looking for any opinions on its authenticity, approximate grade, and variety type?
Any help is greatly appreciated...

Weight 26.2 grams
39.7mm diameter
2.85mm thick

Sorry for the picture quality as this was taken after hours in a cigar room.

I don't even know where to start on why I don't like this one. With that said, I'm going to go research and see if I can't come up with an attribution. That may help me think it through more clearly.

Sure looks fake. Liberty needs a nose job. The rim should not be raised like as seen on both the obverse and the reverse.

You know what, I'm not going to bother. The denticles end before the rim. It had to be struck in a collar. That's enough for me.

Fake.

Confirmed my thoughts. Thanks for taking the time.
Just a heads up this was in TPG plastic with numbers that checked out for my friend.
I hated to have to tell him he had been had.
Sorry to bother with such an obvious one but I really wanted to be positive.
Thanks again.

The obverse looks more than a little off. I am going to say fake. They did a good job with the reverse though.

sad to say, we live in a day where counterfeiters are producing fake coins in fake slabs using real certification numbers so that there are no red alarms unless you are smart enough to trust the coin and not the plastic.

Coin was minted in China by J-Man owner of "The Big Tree Coin Factory". Susan Headly discovered this fake 5+ years ago. The giveaways are the roughness behind Lady Liberty on the obverse and the cut in the 4th vertical stripe and a couple of cuts, in the same location, on the horizontal lines on the reverse shield. They were all dated 1799 and have the same diagnostic flaws as they were all made from the same original coin via die transfer:

This coin exhibits all the tell tale signs of a modern fake.
