I found another $1 star note from 2006 San Francisco and am kind of let down about it. Not about the overall note but idea that it is one of 5.7 million. Compounding that it's one of last 100K of the run.

One the better side, its condition is really good having a couple of folds and a crease in one corner. Compounding this is that it is the 3th * note of 2006 the others being from print runs of 640K.

I guess that the last sentence is the rub of this find. But it is really a find that I'll be keeping.

The only things that you have going for modern paper money is that it 1) isn't collected as much as other things like modern coins; 2) paper money doesn't last as long as coins and as such, 3) gets destroyed in large quantities. $1 notes are printed more than any other note, and the majority of all notes printed are going to replace the ones that are worn out.

So, while there might have been 5.7 million printed, how many of them actually entered circulation? Certainly a decent percentage has been. Give it 20-50 years...the surviving quantities of notes in all grades will be a lot lower than 5.7 million, and that's where the fun starts. (That, and hoping by then the amount of collectors of (now modern) notes will be higher.

I agree, Groszy, although I think points 2 and 3 are really one point.

One counterpoint is that star notes are more likely to be set aside and kept in collections/sock drawers than a non-star note, so it's conceivable that star notes would have a lesser attrition rate than non-star.

Since 1976 star notes are still found in general circulation today by collectors I feel that for the most part all bills are subject to the same attrition problems of wear and tear that lead to their withdrawal and destruction.

Most people (outside of the numismatic community) don't care about the uniqueness of a star note or don't even know that they exist. The only thing that they care about is "will it spend".

The statistical law or random probability prevails over any coin or bill being placed in a collection

That's entirely possible, ghostrider. Like yours, my post was an opinion without any data to back it up.
