Hello! Today I was just out on the bay looking at some slabed coins when I came across this! I bought it for $9 without shopping around. Whoops. I saw one in OGP for like $4. How do you think I did? http://www.ebay.com/itm/201349161769

I was thinking of doing a post on the Ellis Island issue so I will just throw my thoughts into this one.

I think the Ellis Island is one of the most hated modern commems (at least in my mind because of the ultra ultra ultra (did I mention ULTRA ) high mintage.

However 29 years later you would think that the TPG's would have a ton of MS70's by now but it seems that they bring high dollar in MS70. Raw the coins don't seem to bring more than a few bucks for the clad half and maybe $20 for the silver dollar.

But slabbed MS69 dollars seem to bring $28 on a frequent basis and for MS70 slabbed clad halves oh boy look out.

However looking at the bid history between the 4 auctions they all have different winners but a few of the same bidders bid on all of them. Could be shill bidding or could be 3 people who need an MS70 for their collection.

And ChildOfTheWheat you couldn't slab it for half that price

I know you bought a proof but here's some MS examples.

You can't compare MS's to PF/PR's. There were 6,925,627 proof half dollars and only 928,008 half dollar UNC's minted for this coin. So the MS70 coins will bring a higher premium than their PF70 siblings. This is a 7.4:1 average.

These PF70's sold around or under $40.

PF70 #1
PF70 #2
PF70 #3

I think you got a very nice example of a coin that celebrates an iconic symbol of America -- and at a great price! What can be wrong with that!

Congratulations and thanks for sharing the images!

I think this and the 1982 George Washington half dollars are beautiful coins. It's good that so many people can enjoy them due to their low market prices.

These aren't worth a lot because of high mintage and no silver content, but I really think it is a fantastic design. I have a couple just because they are so cheap and the depict an American ideal and landmark.

As for how you did on the "deal", it looks like there are multiple sold listing for PF-69 slabs that are in the $9-10 range, so I suppose that is what it is worth. If you just wanted the coin, you could have paid less. Don't crack it out, though or it's worth like $2! :)

Got the pictures, finally! I LOVE the gold toning this coin has, but the pictures don't really show it.

Oh, and sorry that the first picture is so big. I thought it looked so nice I only wanted to condense it too 200 MB

Oh, the scratches are on the slab, not the coin.
