I wasn't available at the end of the auction, so I put my max bid in an hour early and hoped for the best. Not a very expensive coin, but I really wanted it, so put a decent max bid in. So, lo and behold I won it with my max bid. The second bidder ran the bid right up to one bid below mine and stopped there. My first thought was that it was a shill, but his bid history didn't support it. My next question was that he bid it up to see my max, and then retracted. Is there any way to tell if this happened? I see a few retractions in his overall bid history, but no specifics. I'm happy I won the coin, but things look a little too perfect. Did I just get lucky and have the perfect bid?

I usually get notified if I am bidding on something and then someone retracts the bid. I will get a email stating that the previous high bidder has retracted his bid yada yada yada.

There's no way for an individual bidder to know if another bidder has retracted one, aside being there to see the bid in the first place and then seeing it gone later.

I may be wrong but I believe a retracted bid will show to bidders if you go to the bid history page, it will not show a reason as only the seller can see that.

let me know if this works....it has been awhile since I had one.

Click on the # of bids on the Item Page for that listing (just above the "Place Bid" button to the right of the Starting or Current Bid display) to get to the Bid History Page.

Information on retracted and cancelled bids is at the bottom of the Bid History Page.

The BH page was reformatted a couple of months ago and no longer contains the reason given like it used to.

Can sellers see retracted bids? I had one auction receive 2 actual bids and 5 retracted.... The 2 bids were in the ball park of what item worth, but is "retracted" just other bidders feeling out someone max bid? I use the ebay app on my phone and can't see any info on retracted bids, if I go to computer will I get more info?

Placing bids to see what a high bidder's "Max" bid happens to be is one of the nefarious things that go on in eBayland. These are usually "friends" helping "friends".

Once they find the info they are looking for they conveniently retract bids on the pretense of "entered wrong amount" and then lie in wait 'till the time is right. They'll then show up again at closing time to run the item up to just below your max bid. (Which is probably what happened to you.). You still get your item but the Seller and his shill made sure you paid at the top for it.

Bidders will also do it to find out what reserves happen to be.

I had a bidder pull the "find out the reserve" stunt on me a few years ago. He did it early enough in the listing that I was able to catch it. I added him to my BBL before the auction ended. Fortunately, the item sold for well above my reserve.

I got a pretty hateful email from him about the whole thing a few days later telling me that he would have paid more and that I was stupid for blocking him.

Oh well. I guess I'm stupid but I want people to play by the rules.

Buyers and Sellers can still see any bid retractions at the bottom of the "Bid History" page. Only the Seller can see the reason for the retraction, however..

Ok, thanks for all the replies.

It's good to know that the retractions show at the bottom of the page. Fortunately there were no retractions on my auction.

Now that leads to another question, which might need another thread, but I'll toss it out here anyway. If someone makes a string of bids by just continuously hitting the BID button to run it up, and then retracts a bid......do all the bids retract or just the last one.

I believe that if a bidder retracts a bid only his most recent bid is affected. He has to retract each bid separately.

If a Seller cancels bids for a bidder then every bid from that bidder (on that item) is cancelled.

Pretty sure ebay thought of this before. I guarantee you someone has tried this in the past. Remember folks, ebay has been around for 20 years!

If there was a bid higher than yours (even if it was later retracted) would you not have received a notice to say you're been outbid. To have received a notice like that and then later still win the auction would for sure be a sign of the retracted bid. Might depend on what notification settings one has on ebay as well.

That makes sense.

Yes, one would think so. I was just wondering if a bid was retracted within a minute or so, maybe you wouldn't get such a notice.

Thanks all.
