I thought a thread on this could be useful to me and future finders of it. With a cursory Internet search I cannot find a list of morgans that are rarely seen and hard to come by in low grades. Can someone who knows most of them can make a list and put the right Metta tag words for later Google searches. Thanks!

Just go look at the PCGS Registry Sets of lowball collectors. The rarest ones are the ones they don't have yet. Pretty simple.

1885-CC and 1903-O are the two kingpins of the conditionally rare Morgans, IMHO. I would also include 1881-CC in that list. I have tons more respect for a Morgan collection that, for example, has a nice VG-10 1885-CC and VG-10 1903-O in it. 1. The two coins are fairly rare. 2. It tells me that particular collector truly understands the Morgan series and its history.

I agree with DE20. I would also include the 84CC in that list. Since over 84% was saved in mint condition until the GSA sales. I just sent one in to PCGS for my circ set. I graded it VF25. If it does grade as such, it will only be the 5th example. I still don't consider it rare in general terms, but in relative terms to the series, conditional rarity would apply.

1903-O is the top of my list. It's kind of ironic that up until now I refused to buy one because the government release put many MS coins into the market but the "going" prices never really seemed to adjust to this. Now that I've begun a circulated set and I'll need to pay near MS money for a F grade coin. AAARGH!!

The 1903-O comes to my mind as well. To think that some of these coins survived circulation for years when they were true rarities before the treasury release is pretty amazing.

As a new Morgan collector, I thank you for the info! Quote:

Judging from the PCGS Registry, the rarest ones are as follows:
1893 1893-S 1894 1900
Those are the examples which have no P01's graded in the #1 set, which is replete with Pop 1 P01's and clearly the finest set in existence. Everything he has is the lowest grade available. 1885-CC has 9 in FR2 and one P01; 1903-O has 5 between FR2 and P01.
