Does anyone know how many Friedberg numbers there are? It seems like they skip around a lot in the catalog. I also read somewhere that every National bank note has a different number (ex. a National Bank of Charlotte note has a different number than a National Bank of Cleveland Note).

Can anyone help me out?

There are skips in the numbers in the catalog to allow room for new additions. Some of the numbers for modern notes have closed the gap necessitating skips.

Every national had a different charter number that was unique to that bank.

Does each charter number have its own FR number?

No,

It is based on the Federal signatures: Register of the Treasury and the Treasurer of the U.S. for the large size notes.

The dash after the main Friedberg number differentiates between type 1 and type 2 on the small size nationals as they carry the same signatures but have differences.

FR # 1800-1 is for a type 1 $5 any bank whereas a type 2 from any bank is FR# 1800-2
FR# 1801 is for the $10
FR# 1802 is for the $20
FR# 1803 is for the $50
FR# 1804 is for the $100
