The 0 was hit with something that displaced the metal making it look like a D.

Not too sure about that. If the 0 took that kind of a hit to make it look like a D there should be some kind of abrasions or scuff marks showing near the 0 in date.

PMD, outer date digits are occasionally found with damage due to counting/rolling machines.

Note how the damaged area is parallel to the rim. Coin wrapper damage.

Very common from that era for the digit of the date closest to the rim being damaged. Might have been coin wraping machines but some say parking meters.

Also the Bum ball machines can damage cents as well. Some of us remember them:
1944-Lincoln-Cent,-D-In-Date?
Also coin counters can damage coins.
