Not too sure about that. If the 0 took that kind of a hit to make it look like a D there should be some kind of abrasions or scuff marks showing near the 0 in date. IMHO.
Very common from that era for the digit of the date closest to the rim being damaged. Might have been coin wraping machines but some say parking meters.
