From my understanding, 1953 PL sets were assembled with any combination of MS, PL, and SP coins that were on hand at the mint, so value is in the eye of the beholder. I think this is also why price guides are hesitant to put a price on them. Your best bet might be to research previous selling prices and go from there based on how they compare.

There's one for sale on ebay at the moment and from a reputable seller. The auction starting bid is $350.00 which is a great price if you get for that.

$350.00 is a great price? I guess if you break them down individually in high grades it`s a good price. I really didn`t think they`re worth that much to be honest. Thanks.

Would it make sense value-wise to break the set & have them graded individually ?

Would it make sense value-wise to break the set & have them graded individually ? Not this set, I don't see any possible cameo's in this set, unless one of the coins is a desirable variety.

Breaking these sets up is a toss up. If the coins grade well you might be ahead, if not, then no. As far as the price of the 53, it depends on the day. I recently had a 54 and a 56 on auction. The 54 sold for 470.00, the 56 for 235.00. I think 400.00 ish would be fair for both parties for an unbreached set. Saying that, the market for Canadian silver dollars right now is very depressed, PL dollars even more so.

Seller states that this is a set of business strike coins, not a PL set. Highly unlikely the set came from the Mint, more likely assembled aftermarket.

The sellers listing refers to it as a mint set. In the description he says it is made up of business strikes and is not proof-like. Good catch DBM.

The set pictured here is the set in this auction http://www.ebay.com/itm/Scarce-RCM-...em2ee167f958. Is it not? The exact wording is "This is a Business Strike Set as Issued by the Mint - Not Proof-Like". So the seller's claim is clearly that this is not a PL set but it DID come this way from the mint. At least that's the way I read it. So I guess the question is, is that possible. One post above mentions that a variety of coins were used to make up the sets. Frankly looking at the above pictures, the coins look PL but I guess pictures can be deceiving at this distance.

There`s no standard value so I guess the value is what someone is willing to pay, so why not shoot high!
