Could anyone tell me if the $79.95 I paid for washington, adams, jefferson gold and platinum plated purchased from cable shopping network was really worth the money? I'm thinking maybe I could have started this coin collecting beginners interest from purchasing directly from the u.s. mint. stock number on shopping channel is....DLRMANIA 07 GWJA. 6 coins total in set. did I get duped or what? please advise. Thanks and happy holidays!

Without seeing the coins I can still say yes...you overpaid. Any coins that are plated automatically loose their value. They might be worth a bit more for the very small amount of gold and platinum (if any) that is on them but I doubt it.
Welcome to the Forum! I hope you can learn and share so that we can help you find exactly what you are looking for at the right price.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but once a coin is plated(regardless of whether it is gold or platinum) it loses its numismatic value and is basically worth its face value. Virtually everything available on a cable shopping network is overhyped and overvalued

Welcome to the forum !
Im afraid I have no choice but to agree with the first two posters.
Many people have been taken in by the marketing on these supposedly rare and valueable coins .
But as has been said ,,the numismatic value has been lost with the plating which has been applied to the coins .

I agree with what everyone said. If you can, return it and take money and buy them directly from the mint. Also, search around this forum because there are other ways to get taken when coin collection.

Return them if you can; if not, keep them as a reminder to avoid the shopping channel. But don't forsake your new interest in coin collecting. There are plenty of great opportunities out there for you. Read posts on this forum, ask questions, and soon you'll be hooked. Maybe you'll find an interest in errors in current coins, or maybe you'll fall in love with the US coins of the nineteenth or twentieth centuries. Then there are innumerable foreign coins, and so on. Some collectors seek out forgeries and fakes. Others focus on currency. Some collect entire series, while some collect just one of each series, and so on. What I'm trying to say, there's a niche for you in this hobby. Good luck!

If you look back a little ways......... I posted the same question..... and did the exact same thing....... But I also have been buying from the Mint directly since last year or so and I've collected 19th & 20th century coins for a long time off and on........ but recently, I go hog wild with everything..... Yeah I'm regretting the purchase from CSN.......I've had it for a few months and awaiting 2008 shipment and then I'm going to trade it to an antique shop guy or "gift it" to a nephew or something....... You can get a lot of info from here....... as I learned ....... ask first and then buy though ! too late for us on that one

Sorry to hear you were taken in by the home shopping network hype. It happens to everyone at one point or another. Return the coins if you can and and chalk it up to a learning experience. As others have mentioned, the mint offers several different sets featuring the new dollars (mint, proof, all dollars, with a silver eagle, etc). Your local bank is another option for more recent coins. Checking out a couple branches will likely turn up some Presidential and Sacagawea dollars, perhaps even in mint condition.

The CSN is interesting to watch. But, don't buy.
Coin collecting is a wonderful hobby.
You'll learn. We all have.

Its unfortunate to hear about your purchase. I used to watch CSN, but I became disgusted by the way they rip people off. A lot of people who bought into the gold and platinum State Quarters quit the hobby all together, when they found out that their collection is only worth face value. Coin collecting is a great hobby, don't get too discouraged, we have all learned from our mistakes. I forgot: Welcome to the Forum.

Thanks to all of you responding to my question. You seem like a bunch of great people willing to help newcomers. I'm still in the 30 day return window, and will be calling tomorrow to cease the shipments and return for credit. Thanks again and Happy New Year.

Is it true that it is in legislature to put the 'in God we trust' on the face of the coin?
And..Are you tired of getting forwarded emails on the Godless coin?

Lucky, Yeah.....President signed the Omnibus Bill and in 2009 "IGWT" will be taken off of the edge and put on the face. Look back on previous posts and you'll see a lot of that info has been posted already.\ 2009 will have 4 new pennies 2009 will begin a newly designed Sacajewea too...... each year there will be a depiction of an accomplishment of Native Americans featured on the back this coin. 2009 will also have new quarters featuring U.S. Territories........Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, Samoa, Puerto Rico Very informative here on this forum........look back at recent posts and you'll see all kinds of good info !

Thanks eaglefoot I knew of the new design for the penny, not too thrilled on the 4 choices however I did not know all the rest. I will have to wander the threads later this evening and read up on them.
