Another late night ebay impulse buy from last week.

1817 Matron Head LC, N-12 R-4 (in my opinion), 13 stars.

I'm a sucker for dark chocolate, even smooth dark chocolate, and the die issues on the date are just an extra topping of whipped cream.

Grade and attribution check would be appreciated, please, if some of the EAC experts would be so kind. :) Will it make an AG? (White specks are dust, not on the surfaces.)

Thank you for reading.

I think it makes AG, and I agree with N-12, unless another date looks like that. Not sure of the rarity, but Celtic 'might' say, 'at that low grade there's no premium for rarity.'

I never buy to resell (no offense to dealers and sellers) -- once they're home with me, they stay there. That's why even the "ugly" ones get album slots.

Middle dates are a lot easier to grade than Briaded Hairs and usually the die varieties are apparent. I'm on my phone so I can't comment on the Newcomb number. As far as grade I would say it's a solid EAC 3. The rims are too far gone to make G-4. As Ed said I believe that the low grade will hold back any premium for it being an R.4. Variety collectors really shoot for VF and above.
